What the Council Does
The Council delivers many services in the community. Some of the services are:
- communication facilities for the community government area
- parks, gardens and recreational areas and carrying out landscaping and other associated works
- sports facilities, a swimming pool, community hall and public toilet and ablution blocks
- collection and disposal of garbage, maintenance of a garbage dump, and the control of litter generally
- sanitation facilities and the removal of health hazards
- housing for residents and their families on such terms and conditions as the council thinks fit
- control of animals within the community government area
- maintenance of roads within the community government area
- maintenance of the Daly River airstrip and other facilities
- hiring out, for reward, of any plant, appliance or equipment belonging to the council
- contracting of works projects, within or without the community government area
- development of tourist attractions
- management and control of sites of historic interest
- support and encouragement of artistic, cultural and sporting activities
- electricity, water and sewerage are through a contract with PowerWater Corporation
- television and radio re-broadcasting in the area
- sport and recreation programs
- workshop facilities including apprenticeship training
- support services such as assistance with Centrelink queries
- support for Landcare in the area
All houses in the area belongs to the Catholic Diocese (which owns the land the community stands on) or community houses which are rented. Each year the Council sets service fees for rubbish collection and ground maintenance. Council receives operational grants from Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments.
Various grants assist Council to pay for supplying the services.
